Food, Fresh Water, and Shelter

Food, Fresh water, and shelter-the Prairieland Animal Welfare

Center calls them "the big three." The Shelter is

getting numerous calls every day for welfare checks on outdoor

pets, especially dogs.

Outdoor pets must have continuous access to fresh food, fresh

and clean water, and shad from the heat and sun.

Pet owners who do not provide these three essential basics for

their pets are in violation of the State's Humane Care for

Animal Act and may be subject to fins and/or having their pet

impounded for not providing adequate care. Failure to provide

adequate care of animals also violates City of Galesburg

ordinances.

The Animal Shelter would also like tor remind pet owners that

leaving a pet in a vehicle-even with the windows open-can cause

extreme danger to their animals. Ten minutes in a hot car can

endanger a pet to the point of undergoing extreme dehydration

which can lead to a coma and possible death in no time at all.

All of the glass in a car or truck can heat a vehicle to over 140

degrees in a matter of minutes.

Keep your pets safe this summer by ensuring they have adequate

fresh water, food, and shelter from heat and sun!
